Andrea Gage-Michaels, J.D., M.D.R.
Legal Affairs Advisor
Andrea has been part of the team since 2020. As the Legal Affairs Advisor, Andrea has a lot of variety in her day-to-day workflow. On any given day, she might be shooting videos for Continuing Legal Education or interviewing industry professionals for one of our web series. She can also be found meeting with industry partners or alerting the media to exciting developments in the world of Medicaid Compliant Annuities. Additionally, Andrea drafts blogs and develops social media content designed to educate elder law attorneys. Since many of her duties include communicating with other attorneys and the public, one of Andrea’s main goals is to shine a light on what our company does to support elder law attorneys and their clients. She believes that when seniors do well, our society and our economy benefit.
Andrea earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in History from Boston University. She attended both law school and graduate school at Marquette University, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree and her Masters in Dispute Resolution, including studies in Mediation, Arbitration, Negotiation, and Conflict Resolution. Andrea has more than 20 years of experience representing the best interests of others and helping them make informed decisions. In addition to working at Krause, Andrea owns Gage-Michaels Law Firm, a boutique elder law firm dedicated to serving the needs of seniors throughout Wisconsin. She has experience working at Legal Action of Wisconsin, where she practiced for the Elder Rights Project, as well as the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin and the State Bar of Wisconsin. Andrea also has experience working in broadcast journalism.
In her role as Legal Affairs Advisor, Andrea is able to do what she enjoys most: working on behalf of seniors in need, supporting attorneys, and creating educational content for legal professionals. Andrea is a licensed attorney with the State Bar of Wisconsin as well as an Elder Law and Special Needs Section Member and a Family Law Section Member of the State Bar. She belongs to the Wisconsin Association of Mediators, the Brown County Bar Association, and the Brown County United Way Impact Initiative Investment Counsel. Andrea is also part of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys as well as the American Bar Association.
The elder law field is very important to Andrea. She moved to Northeast Wisconsin to work for the Elder Rights Project at Legal Action of Wisconsin. As managing attorney, she represented elder abuse victims of crime as they worked to stabilize their lives, live independently, and meet their emotional and physical needs. Very quickly, working with elders became her passion and led her to joining our team and launching her own law practice. For Andrea, the most challenging as well as the most rewarding aspect of elder law is that it covers so many different areas. Since older people often approach elder law attorneys with several potential causes of action, Andrea understands the importance of sorting out the issues and devising a strategy for success. She always takes a holistic approach to the entire process and truly values the opportunity to be a senior’s problem-solver, trusted advisor, and counselor.
Andrea is continuously inspired by this quote from John Wesley:
“Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.”
In 2019, Andrea was honored as one of the Wisconsin Women in the Law for her work with elderly clients. She took that award as an indication that she was on the right career path, and that inspired her to seek out additional ways to help seniors. She loves being able to work with an organization that helps older people preserve their assets and secure care, a need that continues to grow exponentially.
Andrea was born in Atlanta and grew up in Michigan. When she’s not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and stepchildren, doting on her niece, and playing with her miniature schnauzers, Walter Mitty and Jackson Montgomery. She also loves to travel and sing karaoke any chance she gets.
