Senior Living Not Included with Nursing Homes, Hospitals for Federal COVID Relief

Last Friday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced recipients for COVID-19-related resources. The list included nursing homes and hospitals but notably left out the senior living industry. Nursing homes in COVID-19 hotspots will receive immediate assistance from quality improvement organizations, the purpose of which is to provide resources and support to the facilities with known infection control issues to help protect their vulnerable residents.

 

Although many understand the importance of providing aid to nursing homes, assisted living and other senior living communities are being overlooked in terms of federal assistance. These facilities also have residents who are at-risk and are also experiencing increased costs due to the need for additional staff, personal protective equipment, test kits, and expanded operations.

 

Also on Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced expanded eligibility for dentists to receive assistance through the Enhanced Provider Relief Fund Payment Portal. Some in the senior living industry are hopeful this may open the door to include senior living facilities in the next level of consideration.
